About Cielo Productions

Cielo Productions, Inc. is a nonprofit video production company based in the United States. We create quality high-definition news segments and feature documentaries from the worlds of science and global health to build awareness of major global health challenges and to inspire and mobilize viewers to join the battle against diseases of poverty. Our mission is to be the trusted provider of quality, in-depth global health news coverage.

Cielo was established in 2006 by a gift from a private philanthropist whose more than 20 years of support for global health work was sparked in 1990 when reading a newspaper article about river blindness disease (onchocerciasis).

We believe in the power of journalism.

We believe that addressing global health challenges is the moral imperative of our time and that building awareness is the key to reaching new supporters and continuing to motivate existing supporters.

Cielo’s founder, Gary Strieker, is a veteran television correspondent with more than 30 years of experience in covering Africa for CNN and other major news organizations. For 11 years Strieker was the Nairobi Bureau Chief for CNN, covering stories including famines in Ethiopia and Somalia and civil wars in Liberia, Angola, Sudan and Burundi. In Rwanda in 1994, Strieker was one of the few journalists to cover the civil war and genocide from the front lines of the crisis. He won an Emmy award for his role in CNN’s coverage of the crisis in Somalia in 1992.
